Cricket Bat Size Guide: Choose the Right Size by Height

The right cricket bat size depends mainly on the player's height, not age. A bat that is too big or too heavy is hard to control. This guide uses the size chart from Gray-Nicolls, a brand we sell as the official distributor in Sri Lanka.

Cricket bat size chart

Bat size Player height Approximate age
Size 1 Up to 4 ft 2 in 4 to 5 years
Size 2 4 ft 2 in to 4 ft 5 in 6 to 7 years
Size 3 4 ft 5 in to 4 ft 8 in 8 to 9 years
Size 4 4 ft 8 in to 4 ft 11 in 9 to 10 years
Size 5 4 ft 11 in to 5 ft 1 in 10 to 11 years
Size 6 5 ft 1 in to 5 ft 4 in 11 to 13 years
Harrow 5 ft 4 in to 5 ft 7 in 12 to 14 years
Full size (short handle or long handle) 5 ft 7 in and taller 15 years and over

Ages are only a guide. Use height.

How to measure

Ask the player to stand straight and measure from head to floor. Choose the size that matches that height. If the player is close to the edge of a range, call or WhatsApp us and we will help you choose.

Short handle or long handle

Full-size bats come as short handle (SH) or long handle (LH). Some ranges also come as long blade (LB) or small men's (SM). Ask us which one suits the player.

Weight and pick-up

"Pick-up" means how light or heavy a bat feels when you lift it and swing. Two bats with the same weight can feel different, because of where the weight sits in the bat. Gray-Nicolls notes that a bat that is too heavy is a common problem, especially for juniors moving up to adult cricket. A slightly lighter bat that you can swing freely can make a real difference. Always pick a bat up before you buy it. Our Vamos Sports store is in Colombo 07, or call us for advice.

Does a higher price mean a better bat?

According to Gray-Nicolls, build care is the same at every price. The main difference is the grade of the willow. Higher grades have cleaner willow and straighter grain, which can mean better performance. For a beginner, a bat of the right size matters more than a high grade.
